What are contact Lenses made of?
Contact lenses are typically made from one of two types of materials: soft contact lenses or rigid gas-permeable (RGP) contact lenses. The materials used in each type differ slightly.
1. Soft Contact Lenses: Soft contact lenses are the most common type of contact lenses worn today. They are made of a hydrogel material, which is a soft, water-containing polymer. This hydrogel material allows oxygen to pass through to the cornea, keeping the eyes healthy and comfortable. The hydrogel material used in soft contact lenses can be a combination of water, silicone, and other polymers.
2. Rigid Gas-Permeable (RGP) Contact Lenses: RGP contact lenses, also known as hard contact lenses, are made from a firm, rigid plastic material. These lenses are gas-permeable, meaning they allow oxygen to reach the cornea. The specific plastic used in RGP lenses is usually a type of durable, oxygen-permeable material called fluorosilicone acrylate or silicone acrylate.
Both soft and RGP contact lenses are designed to be biocompatible, meaning they are safe for use in contact with the eyes. The materials used in contact lenses are carefully chosen to provide comfort, clarity of vision, and allow for the necessary flow of oxygen to maintain eye health.
